2018 Westphal Senior Exhibition
May 23, 2018
Fashion '18
Studio 54, Rocky Horror Picture Show, 19th Century circuses, and urban botanicals are the inspiration for some Fashion Design students whose collections are featured in Drexel University's Annual Fashion Show, presented on Saturday, June 2nd. This year’s show will take place at the spectacular Urban Outfitters Corporate Headquarters at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The first show will be held at 4pm and the second show is at 8pm followed by a wine and cheese reception. Each year, Drexel’s Design & Merchandising seniors work behind the scenes to produce, direct, and execute the fashion show, and create the award-winning lifestyle D&M Magazine. Music Industry students have worked with the designers to select music for each collection and Graphic Design students are assisting with the visuals. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here. For more information, call 215.895.2390 or visit fashionshow.westphal.drexel.edu.
Product Design
The 2018 Product Design senior class, the fifth graduating class from this top-ranked program, will present their thesis work on Tuesday, June 5th in the Leonard Pearlstein Gallery at 5pm. The unique projects are a culmination of seven months of dedicated work and epitomize the individual outcomes of the program’s unique approach to design education. Some projects address issues previously untouched by the design world, many aim to impact positive societal change. Projects address healthcare and well-being, learning and education, sustainability, smart objects, outdoor recreation, and more.
Design & Merchandising
The inaugural Design & Merchandising Senior Sendoff and Showcase will be held on Thursday, June 7th from 6-8pm in the URBN Center Lobby. All graduating Design & Merchandising students will have the opportunity to interact with alumni, industry professionals, and faculty. During the event, Design & Merchandising seniors will exhibit a variety of work from the past year, showcasing their skills across the fashion and lifestyle goods industries, as well as this year’s edition of the award-winning lifestyle D&M Magazine.
Photography
Through an intensive nine-month thesis process, the Photography seniors have completed a diverse body of work that includes portraiture, fashion, sports, landscape and fine art, in color as well as in black and white. Thesis projects will be on view in the Leonard Pearlstein Gallery with an opening reception on Friday, June 8th at 6pm. The show will be open to the public from Thursday, June 7th through Saturday, June 9th from 11am-5pm. Paul Runyon, Photography Program Director, notes that the wide range of work represents a core philosophy of the program: the premise that photographers today are creating both fine art and applied or commercial work simultaneously.
Graphic Design
This year’s Graphic Design Senior Show offers the opportunity to see stunning work and to meet with our accomplished and now experienced designers. Highlights include book design, packaging, publication design, web design, wayfinding, exhibition design, and motion graphics. Two of Graphic Design USA’s Students to Watch in 2018—Carina Yuen and Hanna Karraby—will show off some of the bold work that earned them national recognition. All in all Graphic Design students had another banner year, winning more than 35 national awards. The showcase is Wednesday, June 13th with a reception for friends, family, alumni, and the general public from 7-9pm in the Leonard Pearlstein Gallery.
Digital Media
Digital Media’s Showcase & Expo features capstone projects in animation, visual effects, interactive media, and gaming, as well as the latest research from graduate Master’s and Doctoral students. Nine teams of Digital Media students began forming and experimenting with ideas as juniors. Teams partnered with students or groups from Computer Science, Film & Video, Music Industry, Product Design, or external stakeholders like the Curtis Institute. The results are polished games, animations, visual effects-driven films, interactive museum exhibits, and mixed-reality live musical performances. On Wednesday, June 13th, all DIGM seniors will present their work during the student showcase at 2pm in the International House Philadelphia's Ibrahim Theater. Graduate students will join them during the expo at 4pm in the South America Room & Australia Lounge. On Thursday, June 14th, Animation & Visual Effects students will hold screenings of their final films in the URBN Annex Screening Room at 3pm.
Interior Design
The Drexel Interiors Group (DIG) will host the 2018 Interior Design Senior Showcase of the best work from the graduating class, including their senior projects, on Thursday, June 14th from 6-9pm in the URBN Center Lobby. The seniors will present projects from across the interior design spectrum. This includes hospitality, healthcare, commercial and residential design, as well as works of fine art including paintings, sculptures, furniture designs, and more. As is tradition, faculty will present awards to several outstanding seniors at the end of the evening. The reception will include a raffle to win items donated by furniture dealers, manufacturers and local businesses that support the interior design industry.
Screenwriting & Playwriting
